You miss 100% of the shots you don't take

I remember this poster. It used to hang beside the Music Room at my highschool. I've passed it many times and got imprinted in my memory

"You will always miss 100% of the shots you don't take" Wayne Gretzky

Back in December I got an email from University of British Columbia (UBC) Medical School. It was a rejection. I didn't even get an interview. My grade score was great, my life experience score was pathetic. Everyone who hears this laughs or gets scared. Either way, I got the email at about 11:30pm and had my Thesis presentation the next morning. I was leaving to Mexico a week after and then it was the holidays. So I forced myself not to think about it as it would spoil my break but now it's time for me to think things over.

I've wanted to go to UBC since 1st year, I mean who doesn't- it's Vancouver!!! However, I'm not surprised that I didn't get in because I was an out of province student (my score would've been enough to get an interview if I was from BC) and there are just very few spots available. Gosh, it was a completely separate application form, $200, and just a lot of work. Do I regret applying? No! Would I apply again later? Yes! Is my life over? No! Was the experience worth my time? Yes!

I mean, it was an unpleasant surprise but I've still got 4 more schools that I'm waiting to hear back from. These are from Ontario so my odds of getting in are much much higher. <cross fingers>

Even if not I'll be applying to a few graduate schools like University of Toronto Nutritional Sciences. Hey food is the number one drug we consume and they do cool research with regards to nutrition and cancer. So yeah... I'll pretty much be applying to Biochemistry and Nutrition programs ^^

The idea of what is it to come is scary. It keeps me up at night, but all I know is that "You will always miss 100% of the shots you don't take". Also, I should say you will never learn to skate until you forget the idea of falling on your behind and get unto the rink!

Learning to Skate- Best way to end 2012 with a bunch of friends!

Have you ever felt like you didn't take a shot in something and regret it?

  1. Ah, great attitude--not everyone gets in everywhere, but heck, doesn't mean you shouldn't try! I'm all about giving everything a shot, because you never know what life might hand you when you do. It may not be what you thought was your first choice, but may end up being all the better for that!

    1. My motto is that everything happens for a reason. I mean I haven't been rejected from medical school completely yet (only 1/5 rejected me) so maybe I just wasn't meant to move so far away from my family...

    2. Exactly! I'm sure wherever you DO end up going will be just the right fit--and who knows what opportunities will come after because of that :)

  2. I should have taken an interview for a better job, but I had already accepted a position somewhere else. Turns out that the job I took was a total disaster that nearly ruined my career. Sometimes life is just like that.

  3. That is one of my favourite quotes ever!!
Or, a classic Michael Jordan one "i've failed over and over and over again in my life..and that is why I succeed"
You've got a GREAT attitude girl. And it is ALL experience and definitely makes you better and stronger in the end - as cliched as it may sound! GOOD LUCK!!
