Healing the gut- my version!

Planks! My 5 minute plank workout is coming along great! :D I can now officially hold a regular plank for 2 minutes and a side plank for a minute. YaY! I still take quick breaks when switching between plank variations but I think I'll be fine without them soon. The up-down planks are coming along too and aren't as intimidating. Goals for the end of February- do the whole 5 minute set + 1 minute of Up-Down planks without stopping! Also, I want to hold a regular plank for 2.5 minutes (or maybe even 3).  I feel like yoga is helping out a lot planks too because it does require some ab work and it has a lot of back exercises.
How did I manage to get to the upper end of that scale???
Also check out my Nutritas Health Articles- inulin, haddock, broccoli rabe, amaranth, medjoor dates, scallions, gooseberries, cinnamon, star anise, maca. Make sure to check them out and like them on facebook ;)

I've been very much inspired by purely twins lately!!! Their whole heal the gut journey has been amazing and I kind of wanted to experiment as well. My digestion has definitely improved since coming off of my prior junk food years :) However, I do notice that I get bloated when I'm hungry or don't eat for prolonged periods of time (like 4-5 hours+). Apart from normal hunger symptoms, my tummy gets distended, gassy, and just feels bloated. Anyone else experience this?

It's fine when I'm at home because it's so easy to just eat an apple or some other snack in between meals. However, when I'm in the lab... well you can't have food in the lab for obvious reasons. Also, I'm not going to leave the lab to stand there and eat an apple... Not when I'm all into my experiment. Forget it!

Solution? This is something I've wanted to try for a while but never made it a habit. It's nice and simple- have four smaller meals throughout the day instead of 3 meals and a gazillion snacks. I know some people have 6 tiny meals a day but I'm not sure if that's for me. There is conflicting research out there with some saying that it's better to eat really light throughout the day as it keeps your blood sugar levels stable. Other people say that food will get stuck in your gut if you eat a little throughout the day (sounds ridiculous). So, like with most nutritional advice- I'll just go with how it feels for my body. All I know is 3 meals a day means I'll be snacking a lot and not necessarily on healthy things. Plus I feel like I function better when my tummy is satiated but not over-full.
My plan is to have not necessarily smaller meals but eliminate snacks. Since I'd be eating more frequently, I shouldn't be feeling hungry for snacks ;) To start I'm thinking 4 meals about 4 hours apart with water/tea in between whenever I'm not in the lab. I'll just play it by the ear and see how things go :)

Do you guys prefer to have the traditional 3 meals a day or do you like having smaller meals throughout the day?

  1. Way to go with the planks!! My highest has been 1:45, 2 minutes is amazing girl!

I very recently found purely twins, their experimenting is interesting!
I've been back and forth on the eating trend. some months, I'll get into such a groove of maaany smaller meals and snacks throughout the day. Lately though, I've been eating 3 big meals, and not snacking much in the middle. I'm not really sure what I prefer, come to think of it?!

    1. 1:45 is really good :D We're both popeye according to that scale. So jacked! lol!

I know right! It also depends on the day too and how busy you are. Sometimes you just don't have time to eat big meals... Sigh... Just play it by the ear I guess

  2. I like to have my three meals, and I do have a snack here and there. Of-course nothing like fried chicken and cheesy pizzas!
*Impressed* at your planks. Girl I cant do the side ones! :,(

I too feel bloated if I stay hungry for more than required!

    1. Side planks are hard! I remember holding them for like 15 seconds when I first tried it. Just start doing it from the knees and build things up from there :D

  3. I have found that having numerous (5) mini-meals throughout the day works much better than 3 meals . . . for me. Everyone is different, so it takes some experimenting to find what makes you feel your best and works well for your situation. Keep testing things out . . . . it can be really interesting to see/feel the differences in the changes you make. :)

    1. Yup each person is different and has a different schedule. Personally I like keeping my blood glucose levels constant. I guess I'll just try it and see how things go. :)

  4. I usually do 3 main meals, but have a snack in between. I think they key with snacks is to make sure they are also healthy and filling. Lately, I have been having veggies, fruit or a few nuts for snacks. It really doesn't take much to tide me over. I think it is also key to drink a lot of water. Sometimes when you are feeling hungry, you are actually dehydrated.

Hope you figure out what works best for you!

    1. Agreed! I am horrible with drinking water but then I don't really feel thirsty...

3 main meals with snacks in between could work as long as I plan my snacks beforehand. There's too much junk that my dad buys and it's always out on the table. Sigh :(

  5. I am three meals all day long but most days I have fruit between lunch and dinner because I get a little hungry. I have seen a lot of people planking it lately. I am feeling the urge to try this and see how long I last.

    1. Hey Holly, thanx for checking out my blog :)

Planks are an amazing exercise because they work out a lot of muscles at the same time (not just core). Do try it out :) You can always start with your knees on the floor to begin with and then go to a full plank once you're more comfortable with it.

  6. 3 meals is what I am use to but I definitely see the advantages to several little ones throughout the day. They are just a little harder to pull off with daily commitments and planning ahead.

Good job on the planks. I need more of those in my life!! :)

    1. Yeah it does take more planning and packing :( When you've got 3 meals a day you only have to cook 3 different dishes.

      Go plank! :P

  8. I'm a terrible terrible night eater. I grab a bite now and then through the day but probably consume most of my calories after dark, haha. I am not a big fan of the small meals throughout the day, more like snacks, then a feast at night. It hasn't affected my health but I wouldn't recommend people do it! When I start to feel it's not working I'll change.
And holy cow you are really rocking those planks!

    1. Haha thanx about the plank :) It's amazing how fast you can see improvements ^^

I have a friend who pretty much does not eat throughout the day and then has a really big dinner. I guess it works for him... I heard that this way makes you more productive during the day 0.0

  9. I am SUCH a fan of small meals! I've always been a "grazer" when it comes to eating, and my brain and body were just not happy when I tried to switch to large regular meals. I do five or six small ones throughout the day, and it makes me happy. But it definitely is a personal thing, as I know others have to have their big meals!

    1. Haha yeah I've noticed by the numerous meals you list on you WIAW! My grandma always screams at me when I graze and complains how it's not the correct way of eating. Oh geez... what does she know!

  10. I'm definitely a 3 meals da day person. I've been snacking too much lately, but not because I'm hungry (stress!). I've tried the smaller meals throughout the day and I just never feel satiated, so I always end up eating more than I need by the end of the day. But I do believe everyone is different! I'm realizing that my 4 year old might actually be more of a grazer/4-6 small meals a day gal!

Way to go on your planks! Core of steel for you ;)

    1. Oh no how you feel less stressed :( Yeah that's the same thing I'm scared about in terms of having small meals. What if they don't feel satisfactory or what if I just end up overeating o.0

Haha! My abs are definitely feeling more muscular :P

  11. I eat 3 meals a day, plus I feel it is better for my family to sit down and eat together. I usually don't have a morning snack but I do have an afternoon one for sure. Around 2pm I have a big bowl of yogurt, fruit and nuts to keep me going until dinner.

    1. You're so lucky! I never eat with my family because they have breakfast at like 10-11am and then lunch at 4-5pm. Yup, two meals a day... It just never works with my schedule :(

  12. I've always been a snacker, so I tend to have lighter meals and snacks, more like multiple meals! I find I get hungry if I try to have 3 meals per day :)
