My weekend was fine. I pretty much spent the whole weekend at home, studying. Also, had a friend come over on Sunday for a good 4 hour interview prep session for what at the moment feels like the most important interview of my life!
I feel like such a health blogger. It snowed in on Friday so my university was closed. Guess what I did? Make banana oatmeal and went for a treadmill run! Ain't that a great way to celebrate?
However, I have an issue. My Achilles Tendon has been acting up. I didn't even run this week before Friday??? It's not a sharp pain and I can walk fine but I did have a nagging pain the second I start running. It went away as I kept running. A part of me is blaming the piles of snow and slippery icy roads. I fell last week while running after the bus (still caught it!) and the area in my university doesn't get proper snow clearance. Hence, walking on "rough terrains" could have aggravated it? Could also just be barefoot running :S It probably is a combination of things and maybe even calf stretches in hot yoga? Also, I of course have to be a "jumpy squirrel like creature" when I'm at home and jump all the time. Sorry Achilles Tendon, I know jumping up and down doesn't do you any good. I'll just have to divert my energy into something else... like planking.
Well enough of

Well it'll be RIES for me for now. Rest, Ice, Elevate, Stretch :P
Have you guys ever had issues with the Achilles Tendon? What did you do about it?

Feel better!! Thanks for all the great info:)
ReplyDeleteThsnx :) Glad you found the info useful
DeleteOh, no! I hope you're feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteFortunately, my AT has never trouble me, even through running, yoga, and weight lifting. I tend to carry my weight in my lower half, so maybe everything is a little disproportionately tougher there?
I'm really glad to hear that you're being so smart about it, though! Too often, we push through injury and then really regret it later.
I've never had AT trouble before either :( I probably got it from hot yoga... they really push you to stretch HARD in those classes. I have potential exercises that I think might have been the culprits.
DeleteYeah I'll take it easy with those particular yoga exercises and make sure to stretch. I'm really busy this week with school work so I have plenty of excuses/ things to keep me occupied so that I don't aggravate my AT.
I haven't and I am the worst stretcher ever! I should know better, I used to teach aerobics back in the day. I have arthritis and I that's enough don't ya think?
ReplyDeleteI always joke my dog's better than me because he's always doing these funny yoga poses :)
A dog doing funny yoga poses. That's so funny!
DeleteIt's interesting that some people say that stretching doesn't help with injury prevention. I sometimes don't know what to believe.
Hey....i was away for the weekend and now wifi is not working...cant wait to write.
ReplyDeleteHow u been.
I think stretching/warmup and cool downs are pretty important.
I skip them but I know its bad.
Keep up your healthy blogging. xo
Hope you enjoyed your weekend. It snowed like crazy in the Toronto area :)
DeleteI do think that stretching is important... something I sometimes get cocky about and skip :P
Looks like you have a great plan of attack to help with your achilles tendon. Be patient with it--it can be stubborn at first.
ReplyDeleteThanx Michelle :) I'm uber busy with school work this week so now I have a perfect excuse to "rest" lol!
DeleteSorry to hear about your AT troubles. I haven't had an issue with that before, so unfortunately I don't have any advice to give you. Sounds like you have some good exercises/stretches to do though.
ReplyDeleteAlso, great job with the planks this week -- 6 mins!
Thanx Kristen :) Yup doing stretches everytime I have those 1 minute wait times at the lab.
DeleteLove how you noticed the plank time ;) I've been adding in Up and Down Planks. Hard but feel amazing once you're done ^^
oooh those are great stretches to be done. I've never had an issue with that area(thankfully!). I hope you feel better very soon.
ReplyDeleteAlways interesting to hear about your barefoot running!
I think that AT is really something specific to barefoot running because you don't really use it that much when you're heel striking. I guess it just takes time to build up the strength of that tendon. Ok the situation is not that bad lol but I do want to run a barefoot half-marathon because I'm scared to put my shoes back on...
DeleteOh poor you!! Sounds like tendinitis! You are so thorough in your research and plans!!! Do you wear shoes on the treadmill? I saw someone barefoot running last night, made me think of you.
ReplyDeleteOh my I've been reading about tendinitis and it sounds scary :S I probably have a very mild form (I hope). I'll just sit on my *** today and study plus I'll be home for half of the day so that I can ice and stretch every few hours. It felt much better today though...
DeleteAww thanx for thinking of me :P I pretty much wear "slippers" on the treadmiill because it's kind of rough to run on barefoot and I'm scared I'd be kicked out of my condo's gym :S
Hi! After my stem cell treatment (at Stem MD), my tendons were back to normal but I want to keep them in shape so I regularly do some stretching recommended by my ortho surgeon, Dr Purita. I also use treadmill without shoes as I had my tendons injured because of wearing shape up shoes! :(
